St. Augustine, Fla., March 12,
2002—The American Culinary Federation (ACF) will have not
one but two great world chefs share a lifelong passion for cooking and
the culinary arts at the 2002 ACF National Convention’s general
assembly in Las Vegas in July. And these particular chefs just happen to
be brothers. Ferdinand Metz, CMC, AAC, is president emeritus of The
Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and a past ACF national president.
Reinhold Metz, HAAC, a German master chef, is president of the German
Chefs Association and a culinary educator and cookbook author.
In keeping with the convention’s theme—focus on culinary
skills—the brothers will share their vast knowledge of the
culinary world and their experiences as working chefs and culinary
educators with chefs and cooks gathered to focus on culinary skills.
That shouldn’t be difficult. They have been practicing and sharing
their culinary skills for many years, inspiring fellow chefs and
thousands of culinary students.
Ferdinand Metz, the assembly’s keynote speaker, was CIA
president from 1980 to 2001 and served as ACF national president from
1979 to 1983. Before becoming the CIA’s president, he was with
Heinz USA in Pittsburgh for 15 years, where he served as senior manager
for new product development. Reinhold Metz’s culinary experiences
have taken him all over the world, a fact that will be evident in his
cooking demonstration during the general assembly.
The brothers were born in Munich, Germany, and Reinhold pursued his
career in Europe while Ferdinand completed baking and cooking
apprenticeships in Europe before coming to the United States. Ferdinand
has worked in several restaurants and clubs here, including Le Pavillon
restaurant and the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Reinhold is involved in
the international culinary arena through his position as vice president
of the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS).
He is also a WACS-approved international culinary judge, as is
Ferdinand, and the brothers share a long and impressive history of
involvement in culinary competition. Reinhold has won 31 gold medals and
three silver medals in national and international culinary competitions.
He was a member of the German Culinary National Team from 1976 to 1980
and a member of the organizing committee for several Internationale Kochkunst Ausstellung
‘Culinary Olympics.’ Ferdinand competed on, captained, and
managed ACF USA Culinary teams for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988, and
helped guide those teams to three consecutive world championships.
The 2002 ACF National Convention will be held at the MGM Grand Hotel
& Casino in Las Vegas July 21–25. Ferdinand Metz and Reinhold
Metz will share their passion for cooking and the culinary arts during
the convention’s general assembly, which will be held from 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Monday, July 22.
