Vitamix Childhood Nutrition Day 2013

Childhood Nutrition Day 2013 was a huge success with over 60 chefs and chapters hosting events in their communities to educate families and children about childhood hunger, proper nutrition and obesity issues. Vitamix® joined the movement and provided blenders to chefs to encourage participation.

While Childhood Nutrition Day is celebrated only during the month of October, let’s use this excitement to continue to reinforce proper nutrition and healthy choices in school-aged children throughout the year. Use our programs and tools to implement an awareness activity and make a difference in your community.

Jeffrey Bricker, CEC, CCE, AAC, and the ACF Greater Indianapolis Chapter surprised kids and parents at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis with interactive demonstrations and opportunities to taste healthy and delicious food throughout the museum. More


Kidd Buffington, ACF First Coast Chapter, shared healthy snack ideas to a Girl Scouts troop and made Peanut Butter & Jelly and Maple Cinnamon Yogurt dips. Photos


Carol Colburn, CC, ACF North Carolina Chapter, celebrated Childhood Nutrition Day at Wake Forest Farmers Market with a fun-filled cooking demonstration of Butternut Squash and Apple Soup using fresh and local vegetables. Photos


Phil Cragg, CEC, CCE, AAC, and The ACF Jersey Shore Chefs Association joined forces with FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in Neptune where students learned about eating healthy and exercising, understanding the role hunger plays in the community, and learning how food banks help feed people. Laura Hartfelder, ACF Middle Tennessee Chapter, showed “little chefs” and their parents about nutrition in fruits and veggies, hiding bitter flavors in a delicious smoothie and reading food labels, especially sugar content. Photos


Paul Higgins, CEC, ACF Columbus Chapter, and Sabrina Schirtinger, OSU Extension Knox County, demonstrated the use of local fresh foods while talking about the local growing season to high-school students in Martha Melick’s Consumer and Family Science class. Victoria Hooker, CCC, CCE, Texas Chefs Association, hosted a “Food Day for Kids” at Coppell Farmer’s Market and talked about building a better salad. Visitors received a packet of seeds to grow their own salads. Photos


Jean Hull, CCE, AAC, and members of ACF Kona-Kohala Chefs Association hosted a cooking class with seventeen students to prepare a garden salad with homemade Ranch dressing, oven-roasted chicken nuggets and black bean chocolate-kissed cupcakes with homemade vanilla ice-cream. The lesson included a brief nutrition overview using MyPlate guidelines. Photos


Jay Jacobs participated in a Childhood Nutrition Day Health Expo at Manchester Middle School in Manchester, Mich. The kids sampled granola made with natural and mostly locally-sourced ingredients. Photos


Addy Kinziger and members of ACF West Michigan Lakeshore Chapter prepared lunch for Reeths-Puffer Intermediate School’s Endurance Adventure participants, a program that teaches students about planning, strategy, teamwork and leading a healthy lifestyle. Photos


Nancy Kombert, CEC, CSCE, and ACF Long Island Chapter members provided tastings at four stations for the fourth and fifth grade students at Waverly Park Elementary School in East Rockaway, N.Y. Sandra Lampert, MS, CFCS, CCE, ACF Chefs de Cuisine Association of California, presented the program “Boost Brainpower with Breakfast” to fourth, fifth and sixth graders at Bridges Academy in Studio City, Calif. The meal included Bagel, Apple, Cheese Sandwiches and Berry Smoothies using the Vitamix.


TonJala Mack, CCC, and members of ACF California Capital Chefs Association gave a presentation to children at Vinewood Elementary School, Lodi, Calif., about beans, as well as prepared five different bean dishes for the students to sample. Qiana Martin, Chef & Child advisory board member, teamed up with Chef Ameerah Watson to celebrate Eat Soccer’s Smoothie + Sport for Childhood Nutrition Day with students at Pine Ridge Elementary School in Atlanta. Donald McMillan, CEC, AAC, and members of ACF North Carolina Chapter members celebrated Childhood Nutrition Day with a nutritional breakfast for over 1,200 students, family members, teacher, community leaders, college students and culinarians at four locations in the North Carolina Triad area. The mayor of Winston-Salem proclaimed Oct. 16 as Childhood Nutrition Day. In addition, the chapter hosted a community event with stations that included creating healthy salads, calculating sugar contents of food labels, and making fresh smoothies. Photos

Isaiah Ruffin, ACF Chefs Assn of Southern Arizona Tucson, held a pizza camp with fourth graders at a local elementary school. Students incorporated local ingredients, picked the previous day by high school students, in making a healthier pizza. Photos


Ricardo Santana and Chefs de Cuisine Association of San Diego members partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of South County and San Diego County Library for a “Ready, Set, Grow– event. There were a number of stations for families to visit, each focusing on a different nutritional topic, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, healthy smoothies and gardening, offering samples, recipes and various resources to encourage families on their nutritional journal. John Selick, ACF Cleveland Chapter Inc., gave healthy cooking demonstrations, as well as a nutritional talk about snack ideas to 150 local Boy Scouts. Following the presentation, Chef Selick served a kid-friendly lunch. Photos


Tene Shake and ACF Monterey Bay Chapter members hosted an interactive and educational nutrition event at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, and spoke about the importance of healthy food members. Club members were then treated to a rainbow salad for afternoon snack featuring three kid-friendly salad dressing like Orange Dreamsickle, Extreme Strawberry and Peanut Butter & Jelly. Photos
