In 2010, the American Culinary Federation (ACF) along with the School Nutrition Association (SNA) led a new coalition of top culinary, nutrition and school organizations to oversee the Chefs Move to Schools (CMTS) program. This exciting initiative was created by First Lady Michelle Obama and Sam Kass, White House senior policy adviser for healthy food initiatives, as part of the White House’s Let’s Move campaign. ACF continues to support the initiative by developing tools and programs for chefs to implement in schools.

Making Chefs Move to Schools a Success

Are you interested in joining the Chefs Move to Schools movement but not sure what’s involved? Have you reached out to schools in your community only to hit a roadblock? We hosted a panel discussion during the ACF Central Regional Conference where the panel of chefs shared their experiences, as well as provided valuable insight as to how they navigated school administrative protocols and overcame challenges. What is Chefs Move to Schools

The Chefs Move to Schools program provides a platform for chefs and schools to form a partnership to work with teachers, parents and school nutrition professionals to collaboratively encourage healthy eating and proper nutrition education to kids in engaging and fun ways. Partnerships involve anything from monthly classroom demonstrations and fruit and vegetable tastings to help in the cafeteria or planting a school garden. Get involved at View Presentation (1.61 MB)

Get Involved

After you register as a chef on, check the location map to see if an interested school is listed in your area. Be sure to add yourself to the locator map so schools can find you. Grant Program

The American Culinary Federation, through the generous support of the makers of Hidden Valley® Original Ranch® dressings & dips offered grants to Chefs Move to Schools volunteers. To date, ACF has awarded 52 grants, a total of $13,000, to support chefs and schools promoting healthy eating to kids. View Recipients
