Colorado Springs Students Named ACF Western Region Knowledge Bowl Champions, Los Angeles Team Takes Bronze

St. Augustine, Fla., May 6, 2011—A team of students from Colorado Springs, Colo., took home silver medals and won the American Culinary Federation (ACF)’s Western Region Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl during the 2011 ACF Western Regional Conference held at Talking Stick Resort, Scottsdale, Ariz., April 29–May 2.

The competition, sponsored by American Technical Publishers, brought seven teams together to test their culinary knowledge. In addition, a team of students from The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California–Los Angeles, representing ACF Chefs de Cuisine Association of California, received bronze medals.

The winning team comprises Liberty Blechman, Katherine Conlon, Robin Flynn, Patrick Patterson and Debra Schmidt, all members of ACF Pikes Peak Chapter Inc.

“We are exceptionally proud of the Knowledge Bowl team,” said Heidi Block, co-coach with Leslie Bender. “We were amazed all year by their dedication and persistence. They came together as a team after volunteering many hours of community service, and transferred that spirit to the hard work of achieving their goal—a first-place showing at this year’s regional competition. Their success in Arizona was fantastic.

“We would like to thank everyone associated with the team, from friends and family to our sponsors, Pikes Peak Community College and ACF Pikes Peak Chapter. We are excited for the team and its prospects at the national competition in Dallas.”

ACF knowledge bowls are open to junior culinary teams from ACF chapters, apprenticeship programs and accredited schools. Competition questions are drawn from five nationally published textbooks for culinary professionals that cover topics such as nutrition, safety and sanitation and the art of modern cooking. The tournament is formatted using a “Jeopardy”-style, five-by-four matrix board for games leading to the final round, and a five-by-five matrix board for the final round. At the national finals during the 2011 ACF National Convention in Dallas, July 22–26, four teams will compete and the highest scorer will be named the winner.

The Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge Bowl is named in honor of past ACF National President Baron H. Galand, CEC, AAC, HOF, who championed junior members and encouraged them to get involved in their profession outside the kitchen.

The 2011 ACF Western Regional Conference, hosted by ACF Chefs Association of Arizona, Inc., brought hundreds of chefs, cooks and foodservice professionals to Scottsdale. The conference provided attendees with opportunities to advance their professional development and enhance their culinary skills through business seminars, cooking demonstrations featuring the latest trends and techniques, cooking competitions and awards.

Sponsors of the 2011 ACF Western Regional Conference and ACF national award sponsors are: American Technical Publishers; Arizona Beef Council; Barry Callebaut; Canada Cutlery Inc.; The Cheesecake Factory Bakery Inc.; China Mist; Custom Culinary, Inc.; Ecolab; Kingsburg Orchards; Koch Foods, Inc.; Mars Foodservice; McCormick For Chefs; MenuMax; MINOR’S®; NEWCHEF Fashion Inc.; New Mexico Department of Agriculture; QUALISOY; R.L.
